Ramadan is for healing

Ramadan is for healing. Our broken hearts and broken souls. Our overpowering egos and niggling doubts. Our straying from the center and losing our way. We heal by going to Allah.

We heal by fasting: Fasting is for the soul, done only for Him. We leave off food and drink and foul speech and meanness. What remains after we shed these weights? Our body heals, our tongues are given a break, and our hearts find their softness again. And if you cannot fast, your healing is in the dispensation Allah has given you, and in fasting from foulness and meanness.

We heal by reflecting upon the Quran: These are the eternal words of Allah. This beauty of this month is due to the Quran being revealed as a guide for humanity (2:185). Its purpose is to guide us. To guide our soul to its purpose & to teach us how to be in this world. Our healing is in allowing ourselves to be changed and transformed by the Qur'an. Open your heart and let the Quran guide you. This is a useful series by Yaqeen reflecting daily on the chapters of the Qur’an: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt6aeIxudCI

We heal by praying: Prayer is food for the soul. If the obligatory prayers were hard this year, we come back to them this month. If not, we add voluntary communal & individual prayers. There is no barrier between a praying person and God, and every word and action is purposeful. We heal by asking: No one loves to be asked more than Allah. He says, “I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me” (2:186). We go to Allah with tears or without, with eloquent words or without, but sincerely with our hearts.

We ask for the good of this world, the good of the next, the healing of everything broken. The simple act of asking, the sharing of our secrets no one knows with Allah alone - these all bring us closer to Him and comfort the heart.

Our agitation is because our souls were never meant to be steeped into this worldly life, starved of purpose, and disconnected from the Most High. So go to Allah this Ramadan. I pray it is a blessed, healing month for all of us.
